Scars (Scarring) – A normal scar is a patch of white, raised skin left by a healed cut, infection, or wound to the skin. A keloid scar is a type of scar that continues to grow beyond what is needed to heal an injury. This type of scar is caused by too much collagen forming while the skin is being repaired. The tendency to develop keloid scars is genetic and almost always occurs in dark-skinned people because of the high level of melanin in their skin. A hypertrophic scar is a raised, red scar, similar to a keloid scar but different in that it stays within the boundaries of the injury site. Hypertrophic scarring can occur in all skin types.
