HYPERPIGMENTATION, a/k/a SUNSPOTS, FRECKLES, BROWN SPOTS, PIGMENT DISCOLORATION, and HAND SPOTS
Whatever name they go by, they are all a result of UVA/UVB damage to the skin. Have you ever seen a newborn baby with freckles? If you have fair skin and blonde or red hair, you're particularly susceptible to sun damage that results in freckles or brown spots. But freckles are cute. That's why most of us don't think about treatment for freckles until were older.
Many people don't see signs of sun damage until they're in their 30s, 40s or 50s, depending on the thickness of their skin. But if we live long enough, well eventually be dotted with sunspots on the scalp (especially men), face, chest, shoulders, forearms and hands. Then we start wondering about treatment for pigmentation and questioning which skin discoloration treatment is right for us.
So what can you do about it? Is there an effective treatment for pigment discoloration? First lets talk about prevention. If you use a sun block or sunscreen every day, whether you plan on going outside or not, you can prevent the appearance of new sunspots or hyperpigmentation. I have an 82-year-old client who has stayed out of direct sunlight all her life wearing a large-brimmed hat and garden gloves and sunscreen since the 60s when it first came on the market. When I looked at her skin under a Woods lamp, I was amazed that she had no hyperpigmentation and very few fine lines.
If you're someone who basked in the sun when you were younger (as I did, using only Baby Oil and iodine for protection), you'll need to consistently work at taking care of your skin if you want those brown spots to go away and those fine lines to fade off into the sunset (no pun intended). Don't despair. Just do it!
The best and fastest way to erase the brown is to jumpstart the process by getting a series of chemical peels or laser treatments on affected areas. These must be performed under the supervision of a physician. The cost can range between $500-$2,000. Glycolic peels sting a little, but they Don't hurt. And you can walk out of the doctors office and back to work immediately. Most people will experience a little pinkness that will quickly fade. Meanwhile, its absolutely imperative that you use at least an SPF 30 (preferably 45) sun block while undergoing treatment, and even at that, avoid direct summer sunlight. That's because peels slough off old, damaged skin cells, leaving fresh, delicate skin that is particularly susceptible to sun damage.
After treatment you'll need to follow-up with a consistent home care regimen to make the results last. Here's what we recommend:
Morning: After cleansing your skin, apply SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic and SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel. These products absorb into the dermis and Don't wash or sweat away. Last but not least, apply a sun block by SkinCeuticals, Exuviance or NeoStrata or Kinerase Cream with SPF 15. C E Ferulic and Hydrating B5 Gel work deep in the dermis, protecting and correcting damaged cells. Sun block or sunscreen forms a barrier on the outer layer of the skin that absorbs and deflects UVA and UVB rays. That's why you need both an antioxidant (C E Ferulic), a deep moisturizer (B5 Hydrating Gel), and a sunscreen/sunscreen.
Nighttime: After cleansing your skin, apply SkinCeuticals Phyto +, NeoStrata Skin Lightening Gel (with 2% hydroquinone), or Exuviance Essential Skin Lightener Gel (also contains 2% hydroquinone). Follow with a product that both treats and moisturizers. Simply stated, invest in one that both moisturizes and exfoliates your skin. An Exfoliant sloughs off old, dead cells, making way for fresh, new skin; a moisturizer binds moisture to your skin, keeping it plump and taut. For dry, mature skin we recommend Kinerase's new line of Pro + Therapy products, SkinCeuticals Face Cream, or NeoStrata Bionic Cream or Lotion, NeoStrata Face Cream Plus, and NeoStrata Bionic Face Serum for those who need an extra boost.
For younger clients we recommend Kinerase Cream or Lotion, Kinerase C6 Peptide, SkinCeuticals Renew Overnight Dry or SkinCeuticals Renew Overnight Oily, depending on your skin type, or NeoStrata Ultra Smoothing Cream or Lotion.
