Skin Care Related Terms that begin with the letter C

chiral – denoting an object, such as a molecule in a given configuration or conformation. Relating to the structural characteristics of a molecule that makes it impossible to superimpose it on its mirror image.

cleanser – a skin care product used to clean the face.

collagen – a major fibrous protein of the white fibers of connective tissue, cartilage and bone. Collagen has great tensile strength and it is responsible for the skins elasticity. The break down of collagen leads to the wrinkles associated with aging.

cosmeceuticals – a skin treatment that provides added benefit beyond a simple cosmetic or moisturizer.

cosmetic – a preparation, such as a powder or a skin cream, for the improvement of beauty especially that of the complexion.

cream – a semisolid emulsion of either the oil-in-water or water-in-oil type, usually intended for topical use. Tend to be heavier than lotions and usually contain more oil.

cross-linking – damage caused to proteins in the body (e.g. collagen) by free radicals whereby the protein molecule are joined and become less free to move. The proteins become rigid and inflexible.
